Respect and Dignity, The First Steps

If you want people to respect you, then act accordingly. No, really. That said, I’m going to use the ‘F word’. FEELINGS. Half of us want to talk about them and the other half of us don’t want to hear it. Guess what? We all have feelings and that’s why we are where we are.

In order to Respect someone, you show concern for someone else’s feelings. For Dignity, you acknowledge and respect them to make their own decisions. When someone attacks others based on that person’s decisions, their dignity is being abused. In the last ten plus years, it’s become more noticable in political climate how we’ve stomped all over each others’ dignity. Unfortunately, respect has become uncommon.

It’s currently June of 2020 and the world feels like it’s been turned inside out and upside down. We have so many national, world, state, neighborhood, and home issues coming at us non-stop it’s fascinating to watch how people react differently. When receiving the same information, people walk away with different perceptions. When receiving so much misinformation out there it makes it more difficult to come to a point where any conversations can take place. We’re renaming food products because they supposedly have ‘derogatory’ names. We’re taking down statues we don’t agree with and in some cases making up reasons as to why they should be removed, etc., etc., etc. So much resentment. What is this vanilla world (can I even say that?) that some want everyone to live in? I thought our uniqueness and learning more about others is a large part of what makes this such a beautiful world.

Rioting, looting, etc. is bullying on steroids.  The very people who have their businesses in our neighborhoods, trying to help us and we destroy them? We make ourselves look like fools and worse doing this. They took the initiative, and hard work to build that business. I understand it’s not always people in these neighborhoods doing the damage as well. They are coming in from other areas to create more havoc.

Why all the display? Are we looking for our 15 minutes of fame on social media? Everyone with their phones taking videos and selfies of (mostly) foolishness.  What may or may not have started out as a noble cause for a protest, has taken a downward spiral. Why are we doing it? We know it’s wrong to go beyond peaceful protesting. We must make our Congress/Senate listen to us by calls/emails and using our social media WISELY. They work for us. Let me repeat that. They work for us.

Respect and Dignity. Those who can’t abide by that need to be called out and I don’t care who you are, what side of the tracks, what side of the moat, what side of the hill, what side of the state, what side of the country, etc we live on.

Let me put this in perspective from my point of view:

1) Looks like being violent Gets results – is this what we want?
2) Why stop here?
a. Let’s have everyone who was sexually assaulted as a child do the same thing.
b. Let’s have everyone who was sexually abused/harassed/assaulted do the same thing.
c. Let’s have all those treated unfairly by the justice system do the same thing.
d. Let’s have all those whose free speech has been muffled do the same thing.
e. ………well, you get my point. There are many social injustices and worse in the world. If there is something to be addressed, let’s address it. We should not ignore it. However, we shouldn’t go burn down everything and take over the streets and inflict damage on each other to get our own way.

I am SERIOUS.

All these hundred of millions of dollars being pledged to and for…….what? I want specifics and so should you. I want to know where every penny goes.  Unless it’s an all volunteer organization there will be funds skimmed right off the top for salaries – trips – meetings- hotels – entertaining.  Look at the current news stories how funds are misappropriated all the time. Is it going to be a trickle down affect?  What do you expect to see or get from this?  Anybody? Don’t think this might happen? I just read an email from the ACLJ which stated, “Planned Parenthood affiliates siphoned off $80 million of Coronavirus relief funds. We filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to discover if it intentionally committed fraud.” We certainly need to make these organizations accountable. It’s a lot of talk to make a lot of people feel good about themselves and for some, drum up more business.

The protests over lack of fair treatment by law enforecement have gone way beyond what they were intended to.  It’s as if it was never the intention and more akin to a cover for what’s really being pushed. No one should be a statistic, and many of the statistics out there are made up and being thrown around on social media. I’m going to do a public service announcement here – Just because something is on Social Media does NOT make it true. There are many people behind many curtains trying to control the narrative. They want to control the narrative because they want to control you.

What do YOU want?  Really?
Maybe what you WANT and what you NEED are two different things. My humble opinion is we NEED to treat each other with dignity. Once we do that we can open the lines of communication and not only listen but hear what someone else is attempting to say.

I’ve been an advocate for life for as long as I can remember. We must be able to live our own lives, make our own decisions, and be accountable for the decisions we make. It starts with family and being responsible. To me, this seems like one of the first steps we should take. Look at family structure and what is happening. We reside in our home pods but live virtually through our devices. We’re not here to live a virtual life.

So, it’s time we grow up and put our big boy and big girl pants on.  It’s life. We’re here to help each other of our own free will and not be extorted into doing so. We’re here for each other, so let’s act like it. If we don’t get it right, we’ll keep circling the drain until we hear that final flush.

No Results and the Madness Continues

We NEED to come together. RIGHT NOW.

Watching many yelling (or typing ) at each other after two horrific events this weekend,. I’ve been silent only because I don’t have answers. What’s obvious is no one really does or this wouldn’t be an issue.

To date, we’ve failed when it comes to helping those with mental health issues. If you’ve read or watched what I’ve read for these past two incidents, you understand what I mean. All sorts of signs were there, even though someone might have ‘looked’ normal. For example, one person allegedly had lists for raping and killing, issues when younger, etc.

I cannot stress enough: “IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!”

I DO NOT care what COLOR skin someone has.
I DO NOT care what RELIGION they profess.
I DO NOT care if they are on the LEFT or RIGHT side of politics.

What I DO care about is the fact that PEOPLE are killing other PEOPLE.
What I DO care about is People hiding behind masks, hoods, or using their elected position in office as their pulpit to incite more violence. The fact that there is time to tweet/do interviews, etc. and yet NOTHING has been accomplished on the immigration/border issues. NOTHING has been accomplished with health care issues. NOTHING has been accomplished with nearly EVERY other issue they dangle as carrots before us, especially before the next election.  And yet, here we are re-hashing the same things OVER and OVER and OVER –  And now they are on vacation . Vacation from what? *eyeroll

There are extremists on BOTH the LEFT and RIGHT. It’s a FACT.
There are RACISTS and THEY ARE IN EVERY COLOR. Don’t kid yourself otherwise.

Social Media attempting to stifle free speech isn’t going to help. The rub there? People behind the curtain are pulling levers to further their cause. They can argue all they want. It’s fact. Whether their employees are doing it without management’s knowledge (which is difficult to believe) or management instigates it themselves. If you’ve seen certain accounts say BLATANTLY racist things and continue to have a microphone and soapbox via social media, and watch others call people out on something terrible and be suspended. You know exactly what I mean.

Guns are not going to go away.

I can use bullet points showing the arguments for both sides, but I’m not going to waste my time or yours adding them here. There’s plenty of information on the internet if you choose to look. Both sides have valid arguments. (When specific items are discussed.) They do.  Unfortunately, much time is wasted by those who don’t have any idea.  Learn what you are going to talk about before wasting others’ time.

I’ve spent most of my weekend praying. I pray and I pray and I pray.   I’m not tired of praying, but I AM tired of praying because of this senseless type of violence.

There’s so many cans kicked down the road by those we’ve elected, it looks like a garbage heap.

Many are stepping forward and donating their time/services/money to the families who have to move on from these tragedies and need help. The world is a better place because of those pitching in. BUT those resources could be directed to other things if this voience wasn’t constantly happening.

It’s not about RIGHT or LEFT. It’s about RIGHT AND WRONG and here we are, stuck in the middle of a stand off with no one the winner and nearly everyone losing.

I, for one, do NOT want to wait until the next election for this to be taken care of.

This needs to be done now, not down the road.

Perhaps a more severe law/sentence for these types of killing frezies too?

Definitely more intense mental health awareness and what we, as citizens,  can do when we see something that seems off without being afraid of retaliation.

I don’t have all the answers. No one does. BUT we can come together and try to work this out. The effort sounds like crickets. I am sick and tired of it.  I am sick and tired of our elected leaders being bullies to those across the aisle and to those who don’t agree with their politics.  Enough.  Never Again.

CONGRESS SHOULD GET BACK AND BEGIN DIALOG ON THIS IMMEDIATELY.  When it’s fixed, THEN they can go on vacation.   Vacations are earned and I’ve seen nothing done to get a reward for.  TERM LIMITS goes without saying.

WE NEED TO STOP DIRECTING OUR FRUSTRATION AT EACH OTHER AND DIRECT IT AT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS, WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING FOR US.  CALL/FAX/VISIT THEM.  Protest if we have to.  This needs to be fixed ASAP!

I’m not the most eloquent writer, but I am passionate about every life being important.

Family, the Glue that Holds Us Together…..Sort Of

Before you start to judge what a utopian world I must live in, please consider this:
Glue holds things together, but it can also be messy. So it also goes with families.

I was going to say there isn’t any perfect family as people portray on television or the movies. However, with the shows on anymore, you would be hard pressed to find one that is not over the top dysfunctional. When did dysfunctional become the new normal? As a realist, I understand that there is dysfunction of some type in nearly every family. Perhaps because we all perceive what “normal” is a little differently than each other. The shows over the last ten years or so have portrayed “normal families” as drug dealing, spouse cheating, murdering….well you get where I’m going.

Unfortunately, some of this does go on in the real world. (If we’re actually in the real world anymore.) I don’t believe it’s the norm, but I do think people can become desensitized to all of it.

If you grew up like me, you would occasionally go see a scary movie with your family that had vampires, sharks, or ghosts, etc. when you were a young teenager. You would sit there, tensing up, knowing that something was going to happen at any moment. As you tensed up as tight as a rubber band and couldn’t take it anymore, you squeezed your eyes shut, so you wouldn’t have to see it. But you didn’t hear anything and started to open them then wham! there it was, the scary scene you knew was coming but didn’t want to see. Maybe you let loose a little scream? Later everyone talked about the movie, perhaps had a late dinner and headed home. And then you had to go to bed. Remember those days? You went into your bedroom, flipped on the light switch and began to assess the windows in your room in direct relationship to your bed. High enough up, you should be okay. Wait, can’t vampires fly? Now your family is yelling from downstairs because they hear you dragging your bed across the floor to the middle of the room….away from windows that may have easy access for a vampire or two.

You are now in bed with eyes wide open, wanting to look out the window to be sure everything is okay, but knowing you may see a face or bat in the window and you’d come unhinged. This would go on for what seemed like an eternity when in reality it was probably only minutes. Finally, you work up the courage to go downstairs to sit with your family for a while. Your mother may have said something like, “I told you we shouldn’t have taken her to that scary movie. She can’t sleep now”. You might have protested with, “I’m not afraid, I think it was something I ate.” After sitting with your family (and talking about everything except that scary movie) you feel better and are able to finally go to bed.

It was comforting to be with my family after something frightened me. You could argue they took me to the movie in the first place, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It helped me to address fears, making me a stronger person.

Everything doesn’t have to be all vampires and ghosts though. For example, the photo is from a family outing for the 4th of July. A wonderful day spent together that started with a parade early in the morning. The remainder of the day was spent together doing various things and making memories. As the day started to wind down, a picnic dinner was packed and put in the back of the pick up truck, along with lawn chairs and blankets. We drove out to where we would have a good view of the fireworks, parked, and unloaded the truck. Then the pesky bees came. The kids were running in circles and trying to keep them at bay. Figuratively waiving a white flag, and making a bee-line toward the truck (couldn’t help myself), everyone found a seat to wait it out. Once the sun was setting and the bees flew home for the night, we slathered ourselves with bug spray to keep the mosquitoes away and headed back to our “perfect” picnic spot. The fireworks were fantastic and everyone had a great time….eventually.

Sometimes expectations can lead to being disillusioned when things don’t go exactly as planned. The point is take time to be with family. Share the good, the bad, and the sometimes scary days. Every day can’t be sunshine and picnics, but we can make a difference in each other’s lives. When children receive these messages, they understand that most things are only temporary and the next day it will be a memory. If it still isn’t a memory and something they need to deal with another day, they will have the courage and hopefully a family support system to help them get through it.

As human beings, we need each other. We’re wired that way. Coming from a strong family unit can add to great leadership and empathy skills. We learn by doing. Watching an old TV show or movie with real values once in a while doesn’t hurt either. Less people should want to emulate things/people that can/have hurt others. More people should be encouraged to do what’s right, even if it isn’t the hippest, coolest, most popular thing to do. In the end, we are always responsible for ourselves.

Play It Safe, Willing to Take Risks, or is it Your Way or the Highway in a Start Up Business

ImageWhenever I see someone starting a new business, it’s easy to be drawn into their enthusiasm and excitement.  For some, reality sneaks up behind them, taps them on the shoulder and says, “Do you really want to take that risk?”  (This is where it can really get interesting.)

There will be those who freeze like the proverbial ‘Deer in the Headlights’.  They’ll become paralyzed, unable to make decisions because they may be wrong.  Now they are more focused on the safety net instead of their original vision.

There will be those who will go full steam ahead, throwing caution to the wind and unaware that their ambition could very well be their undoing without the proper caution.

Then there will be those with a vision, a detailed plan and the ability to move like a willow tree.  Why a willow?  Because felixibility is a key element.  Always be ready and willing to learn more about your business, customers and competition.  Keep it balanced, but don’t make it a balancing act.
